West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood mask with a simplistic visage, jagged teeth, and a raffia beard attached to the drilled perforations that encircle the mask's rim. In Dan culture and performances, the masks are integrated into the hierarchical system that governs political and religious life. Size w/ beard: 20" L x 5.5" W (50.8 cm x 14 cm)
