Description:

West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wood kagle or spirit mask featuring an evocative visage comprised of a projecting brow above triangular, openwork eyes, a broad nose, raised cheekbones, and full lips held slightly open, all enveloped in a rich, espresso-hued pigment. Kagle masks are seen as troublemakers within the village, meant to disrupt social festivals with aggression and erraticism. Their true purpose is to teach and reinforce how societal institutions behave when disturbed, relying on discipline and order to preserve their foundations. Size: 4.4" W x 7.9" H (11.2 cm x 20.1 cm); 11.8" H (30 cm) on included custom stand.
