West Africa, Central Mali, Dogon peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A remarkable wood stool presenting 5 bowed legs bearing anthropomorphic busts that connect the flared seat to the conical base. All surrounding a central column, each annular visage presents down-turned eyes, a triangular nose, high cheekbones, and elongated lips, flanked by a pair of high-set ears and supported by sloped shoulders. The concave seat of the stool has been worn to a silky-smooth finish from decades of use. Size: 10" Diameter x 12" H (25.4 cm x 30.5 cm)
