Northwest Africa, southern Sahara, probably Mali, Fulani / Tuareg people, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A unique and quite hefty silver ring comprised of decorative ribs of alternating sizes and a flattened face on one side with a slight split from where the ends of the band are joined together. Formed via the lost wax process, this fascinating adornment was made from melted down silver coins, usually Maria Theresa thalers - silver bullion coins that came to be used as currency in parts of Africa. This may have been worn as a pendant, earring, or hair decoration by Fulani or Tuareg women.
