Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast, Senufo, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A lovely, carved wooden male figure that most likely belonged to a male and female pair of figures symbolizing the primordial couple from the Senufo peoples. He stands upon an integral base, thick delineated legs, petite genitalia, bent elbows with upper arm bangles, and an oversized stylized head. His visage consists of carved eyes, wide nose, and protruding ears, with a characteristic crescent-shaped coiffure. The surface is lustrous and polished from age and touch. Size: 2" L x 2" W x 7.75" H (5.1 cm x 5.1 cm x 19.7 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand.
