Description:

Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Songye, Kalebwe District, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. An impressive wooden shield of ovoid form adorned in black and white pigments and featuring a traditional Songye mask known as a kifwebe at the center. Enveloped in incised striations, the vizard presents closed, semi-circular eyes, a triangular nose, sunken cheeks, a circular mouth, and a flared, flat chin. Horizontal, curvilinear bands surround the mask, while a vertical handle protrudes from the verso. Size: 11.2" W x 23" H (28.4 cm x 58.4 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with break lines visible. Some minor nicks, chipping, and stable hairline fissures. Small perforation to chin of mask and light abrasions in areas. Otherwise, very nice with great preservation of pigments and incised details. Light patina throughout.
