Native American, Alaskan Native, ca. late 19th century CE. A drum made from an old turned wood bowl, with caribou hide stretched over the wooden surface and nailed in place around the edges with hand-wrought iron nails. A rich sound emanates from the drum when played. Drums, as with many instruments in the Pacific Northwest, are linked with shamanic practice - used to indicate the start and end of a ceremony, and, sometimes, the presence of spirits. Size: 10.5" W x 2.2" H (26.7 cm x 5.6 cm)
