Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast United States, Southeast Alaska, Tlingit, Tsimshian, or Haida people, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A cedar bentwood box, the body's walls made from a single plank of wood with beveled corners and rattan / cane strips stitching up the seam side. The lid uses both dried sinew cords and nails to hold the planks together, and the base is nailed in place. The box is simply adorned with vertical red pigments at the corners, and plainer boxes such as this were storage containers for household goods and possessions. Bentwood containers are made by grooving, steaming, and bending a plank of yellow or red cedar for the sides- three corners bent at right angles, the fourth corner is tied or pegged tightly - they were often watertight once completed! - Condition: Large gaps between planks on base and lid as shown, likely from expanding / contracting / pressure fissures. Tearing to rattan stitches and on body seam but body is holding together. Strings probably added at a later time. Abrasions and chips throughout. Nice patina. Great signs of age and use throughout.
