Description:

**Originally Listed At $450**

North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of 8 brass and iron spring scales from a variety of makers and in various sizes, each comprised of a front brass plate, an arrow indicator, a steel spring fixed inside an iron cylinder, and a hook and ring for suspension. The item to be weighed was hung on the hook, which was attached to the vertical spring, the spring would extend from the resting position and drag the arrow indicator downwards to point at the number markings. All scales have an iron suspension ring at the opposite end as the mechanism relied on the principles of gravity and acceleration to make accurate readings, so they had to be suspended. This type of scale was mainly used for ranches for weighing feed, butchers, and grain silos. Makers include Landers, Frary's, Chatillons, Sargent & CO. Size of smallest: 8.5" L x 1.25" W (21.6 cm x 3.2 cm); largest: 18" L x 3.125" W (45.7 cm x 7.9 cm)
