Description:

North America, United States, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A hand-carved marble lamb laying recumbent in a serene manner atop an integral rectangular plinth. The plump ovine creature presents with slender legs and hooved feet, a curved tail laying flush against the posterior, and its neck turned to one side. The tapered head bears drilled nostrils, incised ovoid eyes below a heart-shaped brow line, and a pair of lengthy ears stretched out from its head. The lamb rests its head atop a pile of thick-veined leaves, perhaps as an allegory of innocence, purity, and natural beauty. Remains of black and white pigment are visible in scattered areas. Size: 11.5" L x 5" W x 4.3" H (29.2 cm x 12.7 cm x 10.9 cm)
