South America, Argentina & Uruguay, Pampas region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely and high-quality silver and iron horse bit with a monogramed plate in gilt copper. The slobber bar is an 80% silver crescent shaped plate with a central monogram in 41% gold, below the monogram is a faint stamped maker mark. To the side of the cheek plates are large silver bosses also with the faint maker marks. The "v" shape that is bent into the center of the bit was used to apply pressure in the mouth for guiding the horse and the freely rotating rollers calmed the horse. Size: 9" L x 7" W (22.9 cm x 17.8 cm); silver quality: 12% to 80%; gold quality: 41.8% (equivalent to 10K); weight: 635 grams
