Indonesia, 19th century. A keras (forceful, authoritarian) royal character, identifiable by the gold-toned face, wide bulging eyes, real-hair mustache, open mouth with painted teeth, and elaborately gilt polychrome headdress. The oldest Balinese mask sets are revered objects — topeng came about in the seventeenth century from masks inherited from East Java, and masks of genuine age are rarely used and may not be photographed. Carved from an exceptionally thin, hard wood — the thinness itself a mark of the carver's virtuosity — with archaic inscriptions on the interior and clear evidence of long performance use. One of a documented group of nine masks reputedly collected in the third quarter of the 19th century, placing this among the earliest Balinese topeng masks in Western collections.
