Description:

Western Europe, England, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive top hat formed with an interior wooden framework and wrapped with soft, supple beaver pelt of a dark-brown color. The base of the tall central portion is wrapped with a black sash that is knotted on one side, and the periphery of the brim displays dozens of decorative, coffee-hued thread loops. Adorning the hat are a nickel-silver tiara with six petite makers' marks on the front as well as a scalloped nickel-silver top ring with folded tabs on top and a repeating motif of maker's marks in lion and crown forms. Size: 9.875" W x 6.9" H (25.1 cm x 17.5 cm).

  • Condition: Tears to interior lining of hat and some threads around brim, with slight bending to overall form of nickel-silver components, softening to some maker's marks, and losses to petite tufts of beaver hair, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina across nickel-silver components.
