Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Pegu (Bago), ca. 19th century CE.. A large molded pottery relief tile depicting two standing female figures, identified as the daughters of Mara, the demon king of illusion in Buddhist cosmology, who sent his daughters in the form of beautiful maidens to tempt the Buddha during his meditation beneath the Bodhi tree. Glazed in an emerald green with white and brown highlighting the women. Each figure is rendered in high relief wearing elaborate pointed headdresses, jewelry, and long skirts, their serene expressions and graceful posture embodying the seductive beauty intended to distract the Buddha from his path to enlightenment. The tile was likely originally part of a temple or monastery architectural program. Size: 12.5" W x 18.75" H x 1.75" D (31.8 cm W x 47.6 cm H x 4.4 cm D).

The green glaze contains low levels of arsenic and other compounds commonly used in 19th-century ceramic glazing; normal handling precautions are advised.

Provenance: Private Orange California Collection, acquired in the 1930's
