Description:

**Originally Listed At $850**

Oceania, Micronesia, Caroline or Truk Islands, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A lovely model of an outrigger canoe with a hand-carved wooden boat and float out to the side. Both parts of the canoe are connected via four wooden outrigger booms and lengths of resin-covered thread, and groups of bound slats atop the middle booms serve as stable fishing platforms. Fine patina envelops each component of the model. Canoe models like this example were created to visualize future design improvements while using minimal materials. Size (w/ outrigger booms): 21.875" L x 11.4" W (55.6 cm x 29 cm)
