Charles Emile Jacque (French, 1813-1894). Chickens. Oil on board, n.d. Signed at lower left and on verso. A rustic vignette by Charles Emile Jacque, this intimate oil on board captures four chickens clustered together against a dark, earthen backdrop. Jacque, celebrated for his pastoral imagery and his role within the Barbizon School, frequently returned to such humble scenes of rural life, elevating them into studies of quiet dignity. His sensitive rendering of the birds reflects his lifelong fascination with the rhythms of the farmyard, a subject that earned him recognition as one of the foremost interpreters of pastoral realism in nineteenth-century France. Size of painting: 5.25" W x 3.75" H (13.3 cm x 9.5 cm); of frame: 8.5" W x 7" H (21.6 cm x 17.8 cm)
About the artist: Charles Emile Jacque was a French painter, engraver, and leading figure of the Barbizon School, where he worked alongside Jean-Francois Millet. Initially trained as a map engraver during his seven years in the French Army, Jacque turned to art in the 1840s, publishing etchings with Louis Marvy before creating original works that drew admiration from critics like Charles Baudelaire. Relocating to Barbizon in 1849, Jacque became renowned for pastoral scenes of shepherds, flocks, and rural life, while also helping revive seventeenth-century etching techniques alongside Felix Bracquemond and Felix Buhot. His book illustrations included works by Shakespeare, Oliver Goldsmith, and Alexandre de Laborde. Henri Beraldi described two phases of his career: the early Dutch-inspired vignettes and the later, larger etched plates that cemented his reputation. Jacque's artistic legacy continued through his sons Emile and Frederic, both painters and engravers of rustic subjects.
