Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautifully hand-crafted low table, likely carved from elm or huanghuali (rosewood), showcasing refined joinery and sculptural design, the surface notched to resemble bamboo. This striking piece features a flat rectangular top supported at each end by dramatically scrolled feet, each scroll carved from the same solid block of wood as the top and joined with precise dovetail joints for strength and longevity. Its warm, time-worn surface displays a deep patina that highlights the natural grain and age of the wood, while the scrolling ends lend elegance and a sense of fluid movement. Low to the ground and built to last, it would have served as a table, often placed alongside a traditional Chinese couch, which was also low to the ground. Size: 39" L x 10" W x 8" H (99.1 cm x 25.4 cm x 20.3 cm)

  • Condition: Heavy wear and patina from use. Dark, perhaps burn marks and black encrustations to the seat and underside. Pressure crack near the dovetail joints, and joints are repaired, with visible break lines on the underside of both the scrolls. Lovely patina, and despite the imperfections the piece is sturdy.
