First, a piece entitled "Amérique Méridionale" (South America) with text that identifies each individual depicted, from left to right, "Indien Charruas, Gaucha, Chef Araucanien, Patagons" engraved by Pierre after a drawing by Philippoteaux, ca. 1859. Next, another original steel engraving with hand coloring. This example was engraved by Waltner after Philippoteaux, ca. 1859 and is entitled "Mexique" (Mexico) with text identifying each personage, "Habitant des Terres Chaudes, Indienne de la Sierra de Guauchinango, Riche Propriétaire, Femme du Peuple, Dame" (inhabitant of Hot Lands, Indian from the Guachinango Sierra, rich businessman, country woman, Spanish lady) Finally, the third piece is entitled "Chili, Costumes du Peuple" (Chile, Costumes of the People), engraved by Saulnier after Philippoteaux, ca. 1859. These examples of visual culture from 19th century travel literature serve as interesting visual commentaries on the intersections of transculturalism, colonialism, understanding and interpretation of otherness, and gender in the 19th century.
