Description:

Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Oromo people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large shield made from hide of a buffalo or a wild animal such as hippopotamus, rhinoceros, antelope, or even elephant. The circular shield has a flared exterior rim, and a domed face with a rounded central boss. On the deeply concave verso is a semicircular leather handle held in place by leather cords knotted through the front. The leather was patterned with linear markings, which are now faded and nearly indiscernible. Note the pierced holes along the rim and remains of knots from cords which may have secured furs, cloth, or other coverings to the shield. Horse-riding warriors would wield lengthy spears while holding these shields for protection against opposing forces. Size: 24.5" Diameter x 9" W (62.2 cm x 22.9 cm)
