Description:

Anonymous (probably Northern Europe, IXX century). Reading in the Parlor. Oil on wood, n.d. A charming genre painting depicting an older man seated in a parlor surrounded by 5 young ladies, one of which appears to read aloud from a book propped open on her lap. The lavish interior is replete with fine detail - a large, elaborate fireplace at the right, several sizable framed paintings hang from the walls, a wooden arcade is shown in the mid-ground, and oriental rugs line the floors - though all is rendered in hues of sepia, indicating dim light. Contrasting their surroundings, the figures are brightly clothed: the man at the center in a red cap and violet robe and the women in pink, burgundy, white, and aubergine dresses. The lady seated to the right holds a lute at her side, perhaps preparing to play for her companions. Size of painting: 5.5" W x 3.75" H (14 cm x 9.5 cm); of frame: 11.75" W x 9.75" H (29.8 cm x 24.8 cm)
