Description:

Western to Northern Europe, probably Germany or Denmark, ca. 19th century CE. A handsome steel blade partisan or partizan, with a pointed tip and central midrib. This partisan features a short socketing shaft for hafting the head onto a long pole, and an issue or style number "4374" is stamped on the rim. Two flanges protrude above the socket with incurved barbs and protrusions. The surface of the blade and socket features a low relief symmetrical vine motif with bunches of grapes and two stylized dragons at the center. While this is a massive piece, the edges and tip are not sharpened, and such weapons, made from the 19th century onward, served a symbolic purpose for ceremony or parade. This is a lovely example! Size: 23" L x 6.875" W (58.4 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000; ex-Andy Garcia collection
