Description:

Europe, probably northwestern Europe, Neo-Gothic period, ca. 19th century CE. An ornately carved marble corbel, designed to be fitted into a wall using the large projecting tenon on its back end into a slot. The lovely floral and scrollwork motifs recall Gothic columns in cathedrals, which were in turn inspired by the architecture of the Classical period. During the 19th century, particularly in northwestern Europe, church architecture looked back to the medieval period, and the neo-Gothic or Gothic Revival style appeared in cathedrals and other grand buildings like the British Houses of Parliament. Size: 6" L x 5.1" W x 6.75" H (15.2 cm x 13 cm x 17.1 cm)
