Description:

Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely carved example of a cup made from a halved gourd, its exterior lightly incised to form a sun or flower motif with eight points around a central circle. Look more closely and see further interlocking circles, even more lightly incised, as well as a band of half-circles around the rim. A beautiful cup like this one would have been used in ceremonial and ritual situations by an elite member of society. Size: 4.95" W x 2.6" H (12.6 cm x 6.6 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.
