Description:

Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely meticulously carved lidded coconut cup, its surface scored with a profusion of closely spaced, cross-hatched lines in broad panels around much of the body. A smooth lid, cut from another, larger coconut, fits atop the body by attachment with a woven fiber strand. Drinking cups like this one were used in ceremonies and rituals. Size with lid on: 4.5" W x 4.9" H (11.4 cm x 12.4 cm)
