Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A deep ceremonial cup formed from the hemispherical half-shell of a shaved coconut. The vessel has a round but stable base, gradually expanding walls, and a thin rim surrounding the smooth basin surface. Coconut cups like this example were used in important dinners, ceremonial occasions, or festivals, though they were mainly used for ritually consuming the kava kava beverage.
