Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. early 19th century CE. A superb pair of scrimshawed sperm whale teeth, each finely etched with neoclassical portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine. The Napoleon tooth shows the Emperor in military attire and wearing his signature bicorne hat, a laurel wreath above his head symbolizing victory and imperial glory. Opposite him, Josephine appears adorned in regal dress and jewels, crowned with a floral wreath that celebrates her feminine grace and allure. On the reverse, the Napoleon tooth bears a cannon motif, evoking his military might. The Josephine tooth contrasts this with a poignant image of an open book a heart pierced by a knife on the cover, beside a spilled goblet of wine, suggesting heartbreak, betrayal, and the tragic dissolution of their union. Mounted on a custom wooden display base, this pairing unites themes of power and fragility, conquest and loss, in the enduring romance of France's most famous imperial couple. Comes with a wood display base. Size of each tooth: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm)
