Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical or Classical Revival, ca. late 19th century CE. This is a massive and a lovely glass intaglio depicting the head of Athena with elaborate crested war helmet set in an 80.29% (equivalent to 19K+) gold brooch setting. This intaglio bears the Greek letter signature of "Rega" for Filippo Rega (1761-1833 CE) the famous Italian engraver, however this is done after Rega, possibly using the signature to create the aura of ancient artistry, that Rega himself was trying to achieve by using Greek script. The ovoid glass is a dark umber brown hue with bands of white and black along the outer edge and set in a gold bezel with a border of filigree twist wires along the peripheries. The verso contains an articulating pin and hook clasp, with a secondary chain and safety pin clasp, attached to the top, which are all in great condition and articulate smoothly, making this brooch wearable! Size (intaglio): 1.78" L x 1.54" W (4.5 cm x 3.9 cm); (brooch setting): 2.25" L x 2" W (5.7 cm x 5.1 cm); gold quality: 80.29% (equivalent to 19K+); weight: 19.6 grams

For the Rega intaglio this is made after, please see the Walters Art Museum website, accession number: 42.1005.
