Description:

Oceania, North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved bowl made from kamani wood, a type of South Pacific tree introduced to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers. The bowl is shaped in a rounded form with a wide and shallow basin. The wood on the exterior has a polished and smooth patina and is embellished with stain to preserve and accentuate the lovely graining. The interior is in more of a natural state with a course surface. Hawaiians are known for their beautiful carved wooden vessels. Prior to the 19th century, they were made with stone and coral tools, and usually carved from kou, milo, and kamani trees. Repairs to bowls, such as this one, show signs of reverence - that this piece was loved enough to be repaired - and the repairs, rather than being hidden, were done with the desire to enhance the beauty of the piece. Size: 12.125" Diameter x 3" H (30.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
