Description:

Oceania, North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely hand-carved kou wood calabash serving bowl. This bowl presents a lovely form with a discoid foot and short rounded walls. The beautiful natural hardwood has been polished to a gleaming smooth finish that showcases the lovely natural graining of the kou wood. Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Size: 8" Diameter x 2.5" H (20.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
