Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden medicine bowl of a tapered form with a fluted body and a shallow receptacle on the top. Accompanying the bowl is a carved turtle shell spoon of an elongated triangular form with a rounded lower end and an angled top with a petite perforation. One side of the upper body bears a twisted sennet fiber cord knotted along the bowl interior and was at one time knotted through the spoon perforation. Important male or female figures in Hawaiian society known as Kahunas would prepare medicine in bowls like this and administer the concoction to the patient via the rounded end of the spoon. Nice patina covers both components of this set. Size (bowl): 2.2" W x 2.3" H (5.6 cm x 5.8 cm); (spoon) 3.4" L x 0.8" W (8.6 cm x 2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Tam Sing collection, Maui, Hawaii, USA, acquired in 2001
