Lot 163
South Asia, India, Hindu tradition, ca. collected in the late 19th to 20th century CE. A smooth, dark ovoid of polished stone, this Shiva lingam represents the primary form in which Shiva is worshipped in Hinduism. Aniconic and deeply symbolic, the lingam is variously understood as a phallus or a cosmic pillar of light, considered by many to be the purest embodiment of the deity. Ovoid lingam stones naturally found in the bed of the sacred Narmada River in western India are known as banalinga (or ban linga) and are especially revered. Formed through natural erosion and rock formation, these svayambhu (self-born) lingas are considered highly auspicious, believed to manifest divine presence through nature itself. This example displays a deep charcoal-gray surface with subtle inclusions and tonal variations. In traditional interpretation, the smooth shape represents male energy, while the natural markings suggest female energy, together expressing balance and harmony. Size: 10.7" L x 6" Diameter (27.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
