Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful bronze hanging oil lamp used to illuminate the wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater), in the form of a Garuda, a mythical bird. These performances use the play of light on a linen screen to project the puppets' shadows. The elaborate vessel features a spout on the chest, an arched handle with a connected chain and suspension hook behind the neck, and a removable lid with a fish-shaped handle set on the body before the tail. The surface is etched with finely detailed feathers, and an ornate crown is set on the head. The wings and tail are attached via rivets. The Garuda is rooted in ancient Hindu mythology where Garuda serves as the mount of Lord Vishnu. It is prominently featured as the national emblem and frequently depicted in Indonesian temples and puppet theater. In traditional Javanese wayang kulit, Garuda appears as a revered character, often embodying loyalty and heroism in epic narratives like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
