Description:

Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. This sword has a plain blade that has retained some of its sharpness. The blade has an asymmetric, curving end. The handle is made of wood and has an almost avian design on it. Indonesian swords were wielded with one hand. The handle is worn, suggesting use, and the sword has excellent heft and feels wonderful to wield. Pedang is a general Indonesian term for "sword", although it may also be used for scythe. Most swords in 19th century Indonesia would have been used by farmers; the simplicity of this sword suggests that it was meant to be used in warfare rather than as a ceremonial item. Size: 38"L x 5"W at its widest point (hand guard) x 3/4" deep at deepest point (hand guard).
