Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Nias Island, northern Sumatra, ca. 19th century CE. A rounded, narrow sheet iron helmet with a thin, narrow rim and two thin iron slats that run front to back and side to side over the top of the helmet. The upper and lower portions of the helmet are made from two pieces, with a clear join line around the upper center of the helmet. This style of helmet is known as "takula tofao" and many versions have additional decorative elements like spikes or horns; the interior would have been cushioned with woven rattan. Size: 9.2" L x 7.5" W x 5.3" H (23.4 cm x 19 cm x 13.5 cm); 11.3" H (28.7 cm) on included custom stand.
