Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A masterfully crafted Indonesian kris (or keris), a traditional dagger revered not only as a weapon but also as a spiritual and cultural object. This example features a forged-steel blade with an elegant serpentine profile - a design traditionally believed to confer mystical power and enhance the weapon's effectiveness. The undulating form, known as luk, is associated with protection, spiritual force, and dynamic energy in Javanese and Balinese traditions. The hilt, hand-carved from dark hardwood, is adorned with a striking pair of openwork maskettes - possibly referencing guardian spirits or mythological beings intended to imbue the weapon with protective qualities. Between the hilt and blade sit finely worked beaded copper alloy spacers, inlaid with six white topaz gemstones that add an element of ritual prestige and refined ornamentation. Size: 19.4" L x 7" W (49.3 cm x 17.8 cm)

Completing the ensemble is a carved wooden sheath, elegantly fitted with a flared and dramatically curved shoulder that arches outward in traditional style. A bright brass sleeve reinforces the wooden body, enhancing both durability and visual contrast.

Kris daggers have long been symbols of status, power, and ancestral lineage in Indonesia, often believed to possess a living spirit (isi) and treated with deep reverence. They were passed down through generations, used in ceremonial contexts, and even worn as part of court dress. This kris exemplifies the artistry, symbolism, and cultural resonance that define these storied blades.
