Southeast Asia, Indonesia / Malaysia, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of silver medallions known as capings that functioned as modesty plates to cover the pubic region of children, strung on cords tied around the waist. The shape is modeled after the betel leaf, a plant used in betel nut chewing. The material and intricate decorative motifs indicated the wealth or status of the family - one is cast from a high 94% sterling silver, and the other is 62% silver - which was usually reserved for high class individuals, but a rank below gold which was used by royalty / nobility.
