Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A nice example of a ceremonial kris (also keris) with a forged-steel blade bearing a gently oscillating profile, a pointed guard, and petite pockets of lighter nickel material hammered into the surfaces. The hand-carved wooden handle bears the form of an abstract zoomorphic head, and beneath is an intricate brass spacer disk surrounded by foliage motifs. The bulbous wooden guard protector rests above the spender blade housing, and each component features highly polished woodgrain in hues of coffee and caramel. Modern fabric carrying sleeve included. Size (w/ sheath): 6" W x 18.1" H (15.2 cm x 46 cm); (blade): 11.625" L x 2.375" W (29.5 cm x 6 cm)

  • Condition: Blade and sheath are likely not original to one another since the blade is distinctly older than the sheath. Blade housing is attached to bottom of guard protector with thick adhesive residue around attachment joint; both components are likely not original to one another. Minor nicks and oxidation to blade, with light abrasions to handle and sheath, and light encrustations to spacer disk. Nice patina throughout.
