Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Minangkabau culture, ca. 19th century CE. A defensive shield or buckler, crafted from lightweight wood with brass six-pointed stars, each with a central domed boss, are riveted to the surface. Wires are impressed into the surface along the outer periphery. The verso of the shield is equipped with four small rings with a braided yarn handle. This shield offered little protection from arrows and was primarily used in hand-to-hand combat and in sword dances by the Aceh people. Size: 9.75" Diameter x 1.5" W (24.8 cm x 3.8 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.
