Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Timor, Atoni culture, ca. 19th century CE. A hand carved wooden mask with a simple ovoid visage and slits cut into the eyes and mouth. This mask represented an ancestor, which were revered and worshiped. Ancestors were thought to be responsible for the creation of the world, to ensure fertility and wealth, and prevent disasters. This mask may have been worn at a funeral, initiation, or other ritualistic events, and when not actively in use, the mask would often be displayed in the home to repel evil spirits. Atoni people believed so strongly in the power of masks and the spirits that embodied the wood, that if a villager stole while wearing a mask, the mask took the blame for the crime and the villager was not at fault. Size: 7.75" L x 3.5" W x 10.25" H (19.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 26 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
