Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female fertility figure shown nude while in a seated birthing position. The feminine figure features dynamic curvature in her hands, with incised breasts, tattooing, and genitalia between rectangular feet. The spherical head presents a striking visage created with hollow eyes, large nostrils, protruding lips as if breathing heavily while in labor, and ring-form ears, all beneath a petite top knot. Dark brown pigment covers the top of the wood, and exposed areas have developed a caramel-hued patina. Size: 4.125" L x 4.7" W x 12.25" H (10.5 cm x 11.9 cm x 31.1 cm); 16.7" H (42.4 cm) on included custom stand.
