Description:

Europe, Italy, ca. 1860 CE. Handcarved cherub wearing a modesty cloth and holding a trumpet-like object. This object would most likely have stood in a church or a private home; it comes from a turbulent time in Italian history, as the peninsula was being reunified for the first time since the Roman Empire, when many people turned to the constancy of Catholic symbolism in the changing world. Size: 23" H x 19-1/2" W x 6" L (58-1/2 cm x 49-1/2 cm x 15 cm).

Provenance: ex-East Coast Private Collection
