Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty / Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful brass incense burner / brazier modelled after a table screen- a circular, hollow shape upon a crouching fu lion on a pedestal. The front faces with relief dragons, and flames to the sides. The casting and decoration are reminiscent of Japanese bronzes, but the form is most similar to Chinese circular table screens. The lid is a modern replacement carved from wood to match the patterned surface. This miniature brazier may have functioned as an incense burner or handwarmer; set on a table to warm a scholar / artist while working. Size: 4.5" L x 2" W x 5.75" H (11.4 cm x 5.1 cm x 14.6 cm)
