East Asia, Japan, volume of "Enko Saishi Den - The Story & Life of Honen", late Edo to early Meiji period, ca. late 19th century. Containing 37 beautiful woodblocks to illustrate the handwritten text, a very rare volume about the life of Honen (1133-1212), a religious reformer and founder of "Jodo Shu" - the first branch of Pure Land Buddhism, with a red chop on the frontispiece and floral imagery on the covers which are made from handmade blue paper. A very special manuscript. Size: 10.25" L x 7.25" W (26 cm x 18.4 cm)
