East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa Era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A collection of four traditional Japanese sagemono (hanging objects), used for carrying tobacco and personal items, accompanied by a wooden pipe with a brass bowl, a kagamibuta netsuke featuring a Bakelite rondel set with a brass dragon and attached chain; a bone kagamibuta inlaid with an imperial Japanese brass medal; and a shell button toggle carved from lustrous nacre. Two tobacco pouches are decorated with embossed leather - one fitted with a sterling silver ring clasp, the other with a functional snap closure. Also included is a silk inro with a button clasp and a chain with links gilded in 34% gold. Completing the group is a wooden box with a richly burnished surface from prolonged handling, and a tobacco aroma within - evidence of its long use. Size of wood box: 4.75" L x 3.5" H (12.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

  • Condition: Fraying to silk pouch and tearing from heavy use. Wood box is lustrous from use, loss to end of lid. Wear and flaking to surfaces and pigments of both leather pouches. Crack to bone kagamibuta netsuke, and crack to bakelite rim.
