Description:

East Asia, Korea, Joseon Dynasty (also known as the House of Yi), ca. 19th century CE. A pretty blue-on-white porcelain water dropper, cuboid in form, with delicate floral motifs painted on each of the four sides, a miniature spout jutting out from its upper front, and a peaceful scene of birds flying over reeds at the bank of a river; a single tall mountain looms in the background, its slopes covered in trees. The vessel stands on four diminutive feet. Scholars during the Joseon Dynasty used water stoppers to wet inkstones to grind ink sticks, using the water to make the ink flow more readily. In the 19th century, fancifully shaped water droppers like these became fashionable. Size: 2.5" W x 1.25" H (6.4 cm x 3.2 cm)
