Description:

South America, Chile / Argentina, Mapuche culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A man's poncho known as a manta woven from sheep wool with a very dark indigo ground that contrasts with the white diamond pattern and red hem lines. The stepped-rhomboid motif known as a gemil, is a power symbol, and worn by men during ceremonies - generally esteemed elders, patriarchs, and chiefs. The nearly black indigo is also symbolic of the night sky - the white gemil perhaps symbolic of celestial bodies and ancestors. To achieve the colors, the Mapuche people are an indigenous culture well known for their weaving, particularly noted for their ponchos that became popular after the introduction of horses and riding.
