Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea/Melanesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved wooden model of a canoe, its exterior carved with relief motifs - the abstract zoomorphic forms that make up much of the art from this region. Black and red pigment highlight the iconography, which resembles two fish touching on one long side, and a scene of fish with suns on the other. Models like this one remind us of the traditional lifestyle in this region, where people used canoes like this to travel along island interior waterways and along the coast, trading, fishing, and visiting friends and family. Size: 25.8" L x 2.25" W x 3.75" H (65.5 cm x 5.7 cm x 9.5 cm)
