Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A bronze applique rendered in the form of an eagle standing upon a nopal cactus and holding a snake in its beak. The elegant form is finely rendered and skillfully detailed in repousse with the bird of prey's piercing eyes, curved beak, talons, and plumage as well as the serpent's eyes, open mouth, and snakeskin pattern. This traditional composition was used for emblems of the Mexican army from approximately 1840 through the end of the 19th century. Similar images may be found adorning Mexican documents, flags, and coins of the period. Size: 11" W x 10" H (27.9 cm x 25.4 cm)
