Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A trio of hand-built iron branding irons, each with a socketing shaft on one end and a pair of large letters on the branding side. One branding iron reads "Rs," the second reads "sH," and the largest reads "Hc." The first 2 branding irons have twisted bodies to provide extra stability when pressing the white-hot letters against the sides of cattle or other livestock as well as spiraling arms that hold each of the letters; the body and arms of the largest branding iron are untwisted. Size of largest (Hc): 18.6" L x 6.4" W (47.2 cm x 16.3 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's

  • Condition: All 3 have slight bending to overall forms, with age-commensurate oxidation and earthen deposits, and small chips around socketing shaft and pin holes, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to branding letters.
