Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A large oil on canvas painting depicting two honorable bishops, Senor Medardo and Senor Gildardo, emerging from behind a green curtain with gold trim, dressed in purple robes, accompanied by a pair of angels, each one presenting a white and gold pointed headdress or mitre to the respected clergy. One bishop holds grapes (representing the wine - symbolic of the blood of Christ present for holy communion). The other holds the holy book. Both appear to wear a necklace with a cross pendant around their necks, though one is obscured by the grapes. Between the bishops is a gold framed text which translates, "Senor Medardo y Senor Gildardo, two of the most efficacious advocates for the poor, finding lost souls and converting wrongdoers to good living." The brick floor demonstrates that the artist was familiar with linear perspective. The modeling of the figures faces is very fine. A wonderful religious and historical painting. Size: 33-1/2" x 25-1/4"
